If you are visiting Asturias, this is undoubtedly one excursion you should not miss. On the Picos de Europa Excursion, you will discover the true essence of this National Park, visiting the iconic Sanctuary of Covadonga, the stunning Lakes of Covadonga, and Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Asturian Kingdom.
Small Group Excursion – Full Day (Approx. 8 hours)
This is a full-day experience in a small group of up to 8 people, offering an almost private tour in a 9-seat Mercedes Vito minivan, accompanied by an official local guide, accredited both in Asturias and the National Park.
Pick-up is available directly from your accommodation in Gijón (08:00) or Oviedo (08:30). Other locations may be possible upon request.
The excursion lasts approximately 8 hours and costs €65 per person (VAT included). The tour is guaranteed with a minimum of 2 participants, so you can book with confidence. There is also the option to reserve the entire vehicle for a private, fully customized experience—please contact me for tailored proposals.
Throughout the drive, I will share stories, history and local insights about Asturias, making it an enjoyable and informative part of the tour.
Covadonga
Our first stop is the Sanctuary of Covadonga, a truly unique and atmospheric place set in the mountains. Regardless of personal beliefs, its location evokes ancient times and provides the perfect setting to learn about the Battle of Covadonga, a key moment in Asturian history.
Lakes of Covadonga – Picos de Europa National Park
Next, we make our way into the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. Here we enjoy an easy walk of about one hour around the Lakes of Covadonga. Comfortable footwear and clothing are recommended, as well as a rain jacket or umbrella and sunscreen, due to the changeable Asturian weather.
If mobility is limited, the minivan allows access to scenic viewpoints without the need for walking.
Those who wish to walk more can hike from Lake Ercina to the Entrelagos viewpoint, enjoying panoramic views of both lakes, learning about their geological formation and the hidden lake. We then descend to Lake Enol, visit a traditional mountain pasture, and learn about historical figures such as Pedro Pidal and the mining activity once carried out at these altitudes. Weather permitting, views can be spectacular; if clouds roll in, the experience becomes equally memorable and immersive.
Access to the lakes is ensured thanks to an annual permit, even during traffic restrictions. In the rare event that the road is closed for safety reasons, an attractive alternative route will be arranged.
Cangas de Onís
After our time in the mountains, we descend to Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Asturian Kingdom. Famous for its bridge and the Cross of Victory, this town offers free time for lunch (not included). Despite popular belief, neither the bridge is Roman nor the cross the original—details I will gladly explain.
We depart around 15:00, returning to Gijón or Oviedo at approximately 17:00.
This is a small, exclusive tour with very limited availability, so early booking is strongly recommended.
See you soon, “caleyante”!
